Women’s Media Day

The Siena women’s basketball 2011-2012 team was formally introduced at media day today which is normally a sign of the beginning of another season. However, for the Saints this year the season began over the summer as they had the unique opportunity to travel overseas to Italy and Denmark, home country of senior captain Maja Gerlyng and freshman Ida Krough. For this young team which includes four freshman, six sophomores, and a transfer student it allowed head coach Gina Castelli to get an early look.

“For me it’s really not the beginning of our season because we were able to start our year this summer,” said Castelli. “We had an incredible opportunity this summer to go overseas to Denmark and Italy to play four games and not only to play four games but to practice during the course of the summer”.

According to coach Castelli this allowed the coaching staff to begin to identify players’ roles and possible playing rotations much sooner.

“We had 10 days that we could practice during the course of the summer so we got valuable experience on the court for a lot of these young players which honestly was a priceless opportunity for us”.

During the tour, after losing two games to the Danish National team, the Saints won two games in Italy, the second against a very talented Italian All Star team. Coach Castelli said she was very encouraged to see the way the team responded and made corrections over the course of the trip.

It was not all business, however, as they still left time for some fun.

“The sightseeing was great. The food at Maja’s house was even better. We just had a great experience there and it really helped build our team chemistry and over all it was just an invaluable tool for us to build our team”.

In describing this year’s team coach Castelli, now in her 22nd season at Siena said, “We are very athletic, very talented, we are young and we have great leadership”.

When I asked just how athletic they were she said that this is the most athletic team she has had in a very long time. It sounds like fans will be in for an entertaining season.  4guysinblazers wishes them the best of luck.
