Jackie Benitez hit a runner with 19 seconds left for the win as Siena beat Marist 69-68 in Poughkeepsie Friday night. It was the Saints’ first win over the Red Foxes on the road since 2004.

Siena has now beaten Marist twice in a row after having won in Loudonville last season. Prior to these two wins, the Red Foxes had beaten the Saints 25 straight times.

Siena led for nearly the entire game holding an advantage for 38:25 of the 40 minutes. They led by as many as 14 points late in the third quarter but Marist closed out the period on a 9-0 run by hitting three consecutive threes to pull within five, 46-41 heading into the fourth.

The Saints built the lead back up to 8 with just under five minutes to go in the game. But, Marist chipped away and took the lead for the first time, 66-65 on a three-point play by Lovi Henningsdottir with 1:10 left in the game.

Siena missed their next two field goals and a pair of free throws and Marist converted a pair from the line to extend the lead to three with 36 seconds left. Denisha Petty-Evans then drove, scored and was fouled but missed the foul shot as Marist clung to a one point advantage.

The Saints fouled with 30 seconds on the clock and Marist’s Kendall Baab missed both from the line setting up Benitez’ game winner. After she hit the runner giving Siena a one-point lead, Marist missed a three-pointer and grabbed the offensive rebound. Claire Oberdorf attempted to launch another three but Benitez blocked the shot and grabbed the loose ball as time ran out.

Benitez led the Saints (7-12, 6-4) with 20 points along with 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Meghan Donohue had 19 points on 9-11 shooting. She added 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Kollyns Scarbrough also contributed with 8 points and 8 boards.

The Saints smothering defense helped fuel the win. They scored 22 points off of 21 Red Fox turnovers.

Marist held the edge from the outside shooting 11-22 (50%) from three-point range while Siena was just 5-23 (21.7%). The Saints had a massive advantage on the inside however outscoring the Foxes 40-14 in the paint.
