Siena Tops Marist On Senior Day

Siena wrapped up the regular season on Sunday with a convincing win, as they beat Marist 80-64 in front of a season-high Senior Day crowd of 7,378 at the Times Union Center. The Saints finish in a tie for third in the MAAC standings with Iona and enter the MAAC Tournament as the #4 seed.
Siena opens tournament play against fifth seeded Fairfield in the MAAC Quarterfinals Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at the Times Union Center. Siena swept the regular season series with the Stags, beating them at home 80-73 on Dec. 3 and on the road, 63-54 Jan. 15.
Marist came out firing early in the first half and twice led by as many as 10 points. They hit 8-11 (72.7%) from beyond the three-point arc in the half but the Saints were able to clamp down and finish the period strong as they carried a 45-40 lead into the break.
The Siena defense was terrific in the second half holding Marist to just 24 points on 8-28 (28.6%) shooting from the field overall and 3-16 (18.8%) from deep in the final 20 minutes. By the midway point of the final period the Siena lead grew to 16 and later to as many as 22 as they rolled to victory competing the series sweep of the Foxes.
Marquis Wright led Siena (15-16, 11-8) with 23 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Nico Clareth had 22 points including 6 three-pointers. He added 3 rebounds, 3 assists 2 blocks and 2 steals off the bench.
The duo provided one of the season’s top highlight sequences during a decisive second half run when Clareth came up with a spectacular block on Marist’s Richie Mitchell. Wright grabbed the ball and raced the length of the court and finished an acrobatic lay in for an and-1 that ignited the home crowd.
Lavon Long scored 18 points along with 7 boards and 3 assists. Brett Bisping pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and in the first start of his career, senior walk-on Jimmy Merrill grabbed 3 rebounds.
Siena outscored Marist 40-22 in the paint and outrebounded them 40-25. The Saints scored 16 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds while giving up just 3 offensive rebounds to the Red Foxes. Siena scored 18 of their points off of 13 Marist turnovers.
Ryan Funk led Marist (8-23, 5-15) with 18 points. Khalid Hart scored 18 and David Knudsen added 13 for the Red Foxes who are seeded 10th entering the MAAC Tournament after winning a tie-breaking coin toss with Manhattan for the final two seeds.
