Siena To Face Penn State In College Basketball Invitational Quarterfinals
- Updated: March 19, 2014
Siena will continue play in the College Basketball Invitational Quarterfinal round on Monday night when they play host to Penn State at the Times Union Center. Following a 66-55 win over Stony Brook on Tuesday in the opening round, the Saints will take on the Nittany Lions of the Big Ten Conference who advanced with a 69-65 win over Hampton on Wednesday Night.
With the win on Wednesday, Penn State will enter the matchup with an overall record of 16-17 and 6-12 in the Big Ten where they finished tied for 10th in the 12 team conference. They boast two wins over Ohio State and one each over Nebraska and Mount St. Mary’s, all NCAA Tournament teams as well as victories over St. John’s, Indiana, Purdue and LaSalle.
The two teams last met in 2000, their only meeting, when Penn State beat Siena 105-103 in the NIT, in what would be Paul Hewitt’s final game as Siena’s head coach. It will be the first time Siena has hosted a member of the Big Ten Conference.
Penn State is led in scoring by 6-4 RS Jr. guard and All-Big Ten Second Team selection D.J. Newbill who averages 17.8 points and 6-1 GS guard and All-Big Ten Third Teamer Tim Frazier who is second in scoring with 15.2 points per game.
