Siena Signs DaVonte Beard

It is confirmed, Siena has signed  DaVonte Beard from Akron, Ohio. Beard, a 6’2″ guard averaged 19 points per game for St Vincent-St. Mary of Akron, Ohio, former highschool of Lebron James, in route to the Ohio Division Two State Championship and being named second-team all-state.

In a press release today Siena confirmed they had received a signed national letter of intent from Beard who was described by Rivals.com as one of the top mid-major targets in the country. Coach Mitch Buonaguro said, “I like him as a person number one. He’s a good student, and his game really fits with what we were looking for. He can do a lot of things. He’ll add a lot to improving our overall guard play.”

When Siena reached Beard by phone today he described what attracted him to Siena.

“I really liked everything about Siena. I liked the players a lot, and really liked the coaches. I pretty much felt comfortable in every way. The coaching staff never put pressure on me, but they remained committed throughout the process.” Coach Buonaguro credits Assistant coach Craig Carter with doing alot of work in identifying the talents of Beard anf following his progress.

Earlier this month Fox 23 spoke to DaVonte during an official visit to Siena (video below). In the report, Beard indicated that noone has shown the love like Siena. He said he likes the campus, the coaches the players the people and that he was leaning toward choosing Siena.

Beard had originally committed to St Francis this fall. Also targeting Beard were  Boston College, George Washington, Duquesne, LaSalle, Akron, Toledo, Southern Illinois, Cleveland State and Northeasern according to Rivals. With the commitment from Beard Siena has two remaining scholarships for the 2011-12 school year. Coach Buonaguro says it is likely they will look to fill one of those spots. Beard will join a freshman class that already includes G Robert Poole, F Imoh Silas, and F Lionel Gomis.

    I firmly believe this will play out to be a BIG signing for the Green and Gold.

    I hope this solid recruiting class backs it up beginning this Fall…

    I agree, this kids game just continues to grow every couples of weeks. He is under rated but has a lot to prove. I've talked to a few people who think this kid has a legit shot at starting at the off-guard spot next to rahk. Could be a solid backcourt for the next 3 years
