Five Saints finished in double figures on Sunday as Siena bounced back to beat Niagara 74-70, coming away with a split on their annual western NY road trip. After being dominated by Canisius on Friday and dropping an 83-49 decision, the Saints earned their coach Jimmy Patsos his 100th MAAC win. He trails only former Niagara coach Joe Mihalich on the league’s all-time win list.

“We lost by 34 points the other night and there’s not a lot you can do to dispel that,” said Patsos. “I thought our team stayed together.”

It was a spirited performance for the Saints who were playing without leading scorer Rob Poole for the second straight game due to an ankle injury. He is expected to return on Friday against Marist.

The first half was tight with neither team leading by more than five points. The Saints hit 13 of 16 free throws and carried a 39-35 lead into the break.

The lead changed hands six times in the second half with Siena seizing the lead for good with 8:56 to go on a jumper by Javion Ogunyemi. The lead grew to 9 with just over 2 minutes to go but Niagara trimmed the margin down to three on a pair of free throws with 36 seconds left. Marquis Wright then hit one of two free throws and the Purple Eagles failed to score on their final two possessions securing the win for the Saints.

Ogunymi scored a career-high 16 points along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Willem Brandwijk tied a career-high with 12 points and grabbed five rebounds and had three blocks.

Wright finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds, Evan Hymes scored 11 points of the bench and Lavon Long who missed Friday’s game with an injured toe, returned to score 10 points and grab six boards.

Freshman Jimmy Paige scored a career-high 8 points, shooting 8-8 from the free throw line and added five rebounds. Maurice White grabbed 5 rebounds in 14 minutes of play but went down with an ankle injury with just over a minute to go in the game.

The Saints outrebounded Niagara 39-32 and outshot them 50% (24-48) to 40% (26-65) from the field.

Emile Blackman scored a game-high 21 points and added 6 rebounds for Niagara (3-14, 2-6). Dominique Reid added 16 points and 9 rebounds and Ramone Snowden scored 11 points and dished out 5 assists.
