Siena Basketball is Back

Their was an air of excitement on the Siena campus today as the school hosted its annual Men’s Basketball Media Day. 4guysinblazers had the opportunity to attend the event for the first time, and took advantage of the situation to speak with several members of the 2011-12 Saints squad.

OD Anosike summed up the feeling of the day when he proclaimed, “Siena Basketball is back.”

“By no means is this a rebuilding year,” ¬†said Anosike. “We’re really excited about this season. We feel like we’re one of the Cadillac programs of the MAAC. We can’t wait to get the season started.”

Anosike went on to expand on his comment, diving more specifically into the excitement fans can expect from the incoming freshmen class.

“I think our youth is going to be exciting,” said OD. “Obviously, there’s gonna be some growing pains. Obviously, there’s gonna be a learning curve, but they’re gonna be really exciting. The freshmen can do a lot of things that we didn’t have last year. They can shoot the ball. We have some size this year. It’s gonna be really fun. We’re gonna be a smaller team, gonna get up and down, score a lot of points. I’m going to play pressure defense. I can’t wait to get out on the court with them.”

Aside from his teammates being a reason for optimism, Anosike pointed to the coaching staff, and specifically Head Coach Mitch Buonaguro as a source of strength for the team, noting his growth in the position.

“Coach B is going to put us in the best position to win every game possible,” said Anosike. “We’re gonna be well prepared. Teams are going to be well scouted. We’re going to put in some sets that fit our personnel better this year. Coach has a better grasp in his second year of being a head coach. Things are gonna fit a lot better this year with all the new pieces we have.”

When asked which one of those pieces might most surprise the fans this season, OD pointed to a name familiar to the Siena faithful, senior captain Kyle Downey.

“He’s a senior, he’s a captain, he’s our leader. He works extremely hard. He finishes first in all the drills. Kyle’s gonna surprise a lot of people. Just like Coach said, his career has been injury plagued. This year he’s healthy. He’s ready to lead this team in the right direction. We can’t wait for the season to start and Kyle is going to be the spearhead of our attack.”

When asked for his thoughts on the coming season, Downey echoed Anosike’s comments.

“We’re gonna surprise some people this year, either by the way we play or how we win,” said Downey. “We might have four or five guys that average double digit points. We’re not going to have Ryan (Rossiter) and Clarence (Jackson) this year. It’s going to be more of a team effort.”

Fans are ready to forget the troubles of last season, and while there is skepticism by some, one thing is clear, this team is out to prove those skeptics wrong. Speed, teamwork, excitement, Siena basketball is back.
