Saints Women Fall In Opener

Siena’s women’s team opened their season at home with the first of many promotional events in a matchup against Sacred Heart. A nice crowd turned out for the Military Appreciation Night on this Veteran’s Day.

Siena fell to Sacred Heart 62-45 in their season opener tonight at the ARC. It what may have been a bit of opening night jitters the Saints struggled a bit early rushing shots at times and committing turnovers. They suffered a tough break when with 12 minutes to go starting point guard Allison Mullings went down with what appeared to be a knee injury. She would not return and later appeared courtside in a wheelchair in a knee immobilizer.

 Despite the rough beginning, as the half wore on they found their groove and after falling behind by 15 points the Saints went on a 25-7 run. Their play during that stretch was impressive as they did everything well. They defended, forced turnovers and rebounded. Offensively, with improved ball movement they got much better looks and senior Maja Gerlyng knocked down three 3-pointers including a four point play that fired up the crowd. As a result the Saints went into the half with a 32-31 lead.

 Sacred Heart came out strong in the second half and Siena was unable to regain the momentum as they were outscored 31-13. Sacred Heart’s defense stepped up creating a total of 21 turnovers, 12 in the second half alone. Gerlyng led Siena with 14 points and Lily Grenci chipped in with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Sacred Heart got 14 points from Gabrielle Washington and 13 points and 13 rebounds from Callen Taylor.

 The Saints will return to action on Tuesday 7 pm at home vs Binghamton. The game includes a special offer.  Fans purchasing a ticket to the women’s game will receive  free ticket to attend the men’s game on Wednesday night for free.
