Saints Look to Right Ship vs Navy

Coming off a tough 54-53 loss to Vermont on opening night, the Siena Saints will look to right the ship against the Midshipmen of Navy. This is only the second time ever these two programs will have squared off. The Saints won the first matchup, 65-56, in last season’s opener at the Times Union Center.

Navy is anchored by sophomore forward Worth Smith. Last season as a freshman Smith scored in double figures 9 times while averaging 6.5 pts and 5 rebounds per game. For his efforts Smith was named to last season’s Patriot League All Rookie Team. In Navy’s Season opening win over Marymount, Smith contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes of action. On Thursday Smith rolled his ankle in practice, but is still projected to start in this afternoon’s game.

Two other Navy starters had strong openings to their season. Freshman guard Dunbar Tilman tallied 8 points and 7 assists. His 7 assists were the 8th most ever by a freshman in a game for Navy. Sophomore Center Jared Smoot also started strong with 9 points, 7 boards, and 2 blocks in 16 minutes of action. Also starting strong was freshman Kendall Knorr who added 12 points off the bench.

Notes:
Like Siena, Navy is a very young squad, with 7 freshman. They were picked to finished 8th in the preseason Patriot League poll.

Siena’s OD Anosike, last season’s leading rebounder nationally, opened the season with a double-double vs Vermont scoring 10 points with 17 rebounds placing him 10th all time in boards at Siena.

Siena’s Evan Hymes is expected to be in the starting line up after suffering leg cramps in the season opener. He was Siena’s leading scorer in that game scoring 15 points in 28 minutes of action.

The Saints will again be without Rakeem Brookins and Trenity Burdine who will be serving the second game of a three game suspension for violating athletic department policy.

This is the first game of a five game road trip for Siena who will be looking to improve on last year’s road record which included just 3 victories.
