Rakeem Brookins Done for Year

Per a series of tweets put out by Rakeem Brookins, he stated that he was done for the season with two herniated discs in his back. Siena has since confirmed that Brookins will miss this season due to back injuries. He has a bulging disk at L3-L4 and a herniated disk at L4-L5. Brookins will remain in Philadelphia for the remainder of the semester to undergo physical therapy. He plans to return to campus in January at which time he will take a full academic course load.

“It’s obviously disappointing news, but our focus is on Rahk returning to full health and enjoying a successful Siena career on and off the court,” head coach Mitch Buonaguro said. “He has the complete support of our coaching staff, his teammates, and all of the great support services available to him as a Siena student athlete.”

This is a major blow to the Saints who are already without Davis Martens for the season due to hip surgery and Imoh Silas and Lionel Gomis due to eligibility issues. Trenity Burdine is also presently out and is questionable for the start of the season.

News of Brookins back injury broke early in the preseason and it was long assumed that he would miss the start of the season. This news, however, proves to be far worse than the initial thinking.

In his absence the Saints will look to freshmen point guard Evan Hymes to run the offense. Hymes has been filling the role in practice and scrimages in Brookins’ absence. Hymes possesses tremendous speed and despite being only 5’8″ can dunk

We here at 4guysinblazers wishes Rahk a quick and complete recovery and look forward to continue following his basketball career next season.

It is what it is – a tough break for someone I believe would have had a banner year at the point. The young players now get more time and will get better sooner rather than later. They may have to recruit more kids from the dorms to be able to practice.
