Q&A with The Mount Fan Blog

To gain some insight into upcoming opponent Mount St Mary’s, we reached out to a great blog that follows the program, The Mount Fan Blog,  to answer some questions.

4guysinblazers: What are the expectations on Mt St Mary’s this season?

The Mount: I think that the Mount is hoping to improve on last season and build toward the future. This is a program that has had a lot of success the last three or four years, but is coming off a down year last year after the coaching change. They won just 11 games a year ago, although were .500 in the NEC. I think the NEC is about as good as its been recently. A home game in the first round of the NEC tournament would be a major accomplishment.

4guysinblazers: Who are the players to watch?

The Mount: Lamar Trice, last year’s leading scorer, has missed the first two games due to suspension. I don’t expect him to be available Saturday. Julian Norfleet is the most consistent returning scorer and he’s averaging 9.5 points a game this year. I think the Mount has some real opportunities to get some points inside this year and Raven Barber, who had 13 in the win over Hartford, could be poised for a breakout season. Danny Thompson a senior who has fought injuries his whole career had a career night with 17 points and 12 rebounds on Wednesday and could be looking towards a strong senior season.

4guysinblazers: What are the strengths of this year’s squad?

The Mount: There is a lot of depth back on the perimeter so I think many view that as a strength. However, I think that the experience on the inside could really be a strength for this team. Thus far they have rebounded very well and that might end up being something that becomes a strength for this team.

4guysinblazers: What are some of the opportunity areas?

The Mount: The Mount has to protect the basketball. They’ve turned the ball over 51 times in 2 games. Without Trice, the Mount lacks some of that depth in the backcourt and the turnover issue has probably been magnified because of it. Although the play inside thus far has been solid for the Mount, the Mount is shorthanded right now with the suspension of Kristijan Krajina and the injury to Jacolby Wells. Whether either plays Saturday is questionable.

4guysinblazers: What have been your impressions/ what have you taken away from the games against Marquette and Hartford?

The Mount: Throw Marquette out the window. The Golden Eagles are the best team that the Mount is going to face this season. It was a complete disaster that got worse as the game wore on. In Hartford, the Mounties got some confidence back by shooting the ball extremely well. I think they also realized that they can be effective inside if they can get the ball to the post players.

This is great that you guys were able to get this type information before both the Navy and the MSM games. Hopefully this will continue prior to each game throughout the season. Good work.

We plan to do this for every game of the season. Unfortunately some teams don't have a blog presence, or at least one we found, so there will be occasional gaps, like the upcoming game vs St Bonaventure.
