Mitch And Staff Prepare Saints For Victory
- Updated: November 17, 2011
A great deal of credit for last night’s win has to go out to the coaching staff. They took a team facing a great deal of adversity and led them to an opening night win. Coach B. and assistant Craig Carter have blended well with new assistants Tobin Anderson, Ben Davis and Tyler Simms. Although heavily scrutinized last season, his first as head coach, Mitch has assembled a good staff for this year. As he explained during the preseason he utilized feedback from his veteran players and coaches in an effort to form a higher performing coaching group. In observing practices and game preparation we’ve seen a focused, efficient, and motivating group of coaches. It was great to see it all come together last night.
The fans we spoke to at half time and after the game, who can often be the biggest critics recognized a team which was prepared, and a staff which adjusted well within the game, utilized time outs well, and managed Navy’s runs without letting the game get away.
The mood after the game in the locker room was upbeat. “I’m elated with the win” Mitch said. “The stuff that we worked on in practice, we did tonight. That’s where we’re really happy. We moved the ball with very few turnovers. We’ve been turning the ball over a lot in practice but not tonight”.
“The one thing we try and do, you know me, we prepare pretty hard for games. We were well prepared. I thought the scouting was excellent. We knew what they were doing. I enjoy getting ready for a game when we’ve got a lot of time. Tobin Anderson did the scouting. He did a very good job. We knew everything they were doing and it showed. Our kids guarded their players, we scouted well, and knew what they were doing.”
“They’re a disciplined team and we actually played better than them in the half court tonight. I thought we actually out executed them in the half court. Our half court execution for the first time out, with four freshmen was pretty good. We’ve been turning the ball over a lot in practice but not tonight.”
Navy head coach Ed DeChellis had this to say about the Saints after the game. “I give the credit to Siena here this evening and Mitch. You know they’ve have had a lot of injuries some things have happened to them but I thought the kids really stuck together tonight. I thought they played well. They made plays when they had to and it’s a credit to him,(Mitch), the staff, and the Siena team”.
