Siena scored the first bucket of the game and then Marist went on a 14-0 run and never looked back in beating the Saints, 78-60 at the McCann Arena Tuesday night. It was the Red Foxes’ 9th win in a row this season, their 35th consecutive league win and their 20th straight over Siena.

The Saints shot just 26.1% in the first half including just 1-9 from three-point range. They pulled back within 6 points at the 10:25 mark in the period but could never fully get it going offensively trailing 39-20 at the break.

“That’s what they do,” said Siena coach Ali Jaques. “They get you in a hole and then it’s hard to come back.”

The Saints (6-7, 1-3) were able to push the tempo a bit after the break, doubling their offensive production in the second half, while outscoring Marist over the final 20 minutes, 40-39. They would pull no closer than 15 in the closing minutes as the Red Foxes continued their red-hot shooting hitting 13-22 (59.1%) from the field.

“The problem in the first half was the game wasn’t our pace,” Jaques said. “When we can get up and down and we can force pace and we can force tempo, we can get the game going. It’s more in our favor. We outscored them in the second half. We scored 40 points in the second half. That was our pace. That’s how we have to play to be successful.”

Tehresa Coles and Meghan Donohue were bright spots for Siena. Coles turned in 13 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Fresh off being named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, freshman Donohue also scored 13 points on 6-9 shooting. She also added 7 rebounds and 3 steals.

“When you talk about effort and attitude, Theresa Coles and Meghan Donohue, every single day it’s consistent,” said Jaques. “There’s consistent effort. There’s consistent positive attitude, work ethic. They just put their hard hats on and they go to work. They’re great kids to coach.”

Kanika Cummings added 10 points and Ida Krogh scored 8 points including 2-2 three-pointers along with 6 rebounds.

Marist moves to 10-4 and 4-0 in conference play. Four Red Foxes finished in double figures. Emma O’Conner led the way with 16 points along with 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 blocks. Madeline Blais scored 13 points with 6 rebounds, Sydney Coffey added 12 points and Tori Jarosz had 12 points.

“A good effort in the second half. We’ll regroup and then looking forward to this double-header on Friday.”

The Saints return to action of Friday in the first game of a double-header with the men’s team at the Times Union Center. The women take on Niagara with the men to follow against Marist. Action gets underway at 5 p.m.
