MAAC Tourney Preview: Siena Women vs. Manhattan

The Siena women head to Springfield on Thursday to take on Manhattan in the first round of the 2014 MAAC Tournament. Tipoff at the Mass Mutual Center is scheduled for 11:30 am. It is the 58th meeting between the two teams with Siena leading the series 37-20. The Saints make their 25th appearance in the MAAC Championships where they hold a record of 23-23. They also hold an even record of 3-3 vs. Manhattan in the MAAC Tourney.

The 10th seeded Saints enter the postseason with an overall record of 8-21 and a conference record of 3-17. They have won their last four MAAC Tournament openers, are 3-1 in the First Round and 3-0 vs. No. 7 seeds. The Saints are led by junior Tehresa Coles who leads the team in points (10.7), rebounds (5.9) and steals (2.1). On Monday, freshman forward Meghan Donohue became the first Siena player to be named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team in the past eight years. She ranks first amongst freshmen in field goal percentage (50.7%) and offensive rebounds (2.3) and second in scoring (8.5) and rebounding (5.1) amongst rookies.

Siena and Manhattan split their two games this season with each team winning on the road. In their first meeting, after a back and forth first half with nine ties and eight lead changes, the Saints closed out the game with a 38-14 run to win going away, 82-58 at Draddy Gymnasium. Siena placed three players in double figures, two with double-doubles. Tehresa Coles led with 14 points and 14 rebounds along with 5 assists and 3 steals. Clara Sole Anglada added 13 points and 9 rebounds and Meghan Donohue scored 15 points with 11 rebounds.  Manhattan had three players in double figures. Shayna Ericksen led with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Monica Roeder scored 14 points with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Blake Underhill added 11 points.

In their most recent matchup, Manhattan shot 55% in the second half and 48.8% for the game as the Jaspers defeated Siena 62-55 at the Times Union Center. Kanika Cummings scored 13 points for Siena. Meghan Donohue added nine points and three assists. Kelsey Booth tallied eight points and nine rebounds and Brianna Logan added eight points and three assists. Allison Skrec led the Jaspers with 14 points and five assists and Kylla Champagne added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Siena and Manhattan last met in the MAAC Tournament in 2012 when the 6th seeded Saints came out on top, 34-33 in rather odd fashion. The Saints went scoreless in the final 8:40 of the game and went without a field goal for the last 13 minutes and 36 seconds but held on defensively to pull out the one point win. It was the lowest combined point total in MAAC tournament history.

Manhattan enters the postseason with a record of 9-20, 8-12 in the MAAC. The 7th seeded Jaspers are led by Third Team All-MAAC selection, senior guard Monica Roeder who averages 12.0 points per game. She ranks fourth in the MAAC in three-pointers per game (2.1) and fifth in steals (1.7). Senior guard Allison Skrec is 18th in the nation in assists, averaging 6.3 and adds 9.8 points per game.
