MAAC Rookie of the Week

Fr., G/F, 6-6, 234, Baltimore, Md./Oakland Mills

Long matched his career-high of 16 points in an important game for Siena, a 69-60 win at Rider on Feb. 23. Although he was in foul trouble in the first half and played limited minutes, Long was the difference for Siena in the second half.

“Lavon Long, just a locomotive. Keeps coming. Definitely not perfect but no quit in him,” said Siena head coach Jimmy Patsos.

He scored all 16 of his points in the final stanza, including a three-point play following a huge offensive rebound to give Siena a 60-56 lead with 3:12 left in the game. He then calmly sank two free throws with 23 seconds left to help secure the win.

Despite playing just 20 minutes, Long just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. He added three assists and a steal, helping the Saints secure a share of fifth place in the MAAC standings after entering the weekend alone in seventh place.

“Lavon played terrific,” said Siena assistant coach Luke D’Alessio. “We got on him at halftime and said we need you to play and he stepped up and played tremendous in the second half.”

Long scored six points in Siena’s win over Manhattan earlier in the week, including a field goal with 10:40 left to give the Saints a 47-46 lead. Long had two key rebounds in the final 1:31 that helped seal the 67-63 win.

Long averaged 11 points, six rebounds 1.5 assists and just one turnover on the week.
