Hymes Scores Game Winner As Siena Survives At Marist
- Updated: February 13, 2015
After his team had surrendered an 18-point second half lead, senior Evan Hymes saved the day, sprinting the length of the McCann Center floor to score the game winning lay up with six seconds left as Siena beat Marist, 66-64 Thursday night.
Siena shot well in the first half, hitting 16-28 (57.1%) from the field and when Hymes hit a jumper with 6 seconds left in the half, the Saints had their largest lead of 13, as they went into the locker room up, 38-25.
The Saints continued to grow the deficit and when Hymes hit a three-pointer with 13:00 to go in the game to give his team an 18-point, 53-35 lead, it appeared the game may be in hand. Marist did not give in. They outscored Siena 29-11 and tied the game 64-64 on a pair of Manny Thomas free throws following a strange flagrant foul call on Lavon Long, with :42 left to go.
After a 30 second time out, Marist worked the ball around, preparing for a potential game-winner and Marquis Wright knocked the ball away from Marist’s Eric Truog. Hymes grabbed the ball and surged past the entire Marist defense to lay in the winner with 6 ticks left on the clock. As Marist’s Khallid Hart dribbled up the floor in an attempt to get off one last shot, Wright again stripped the ball as time expired.
Siena (10-14, 7-8) was led by Rob Poole and Wright who each scored 15 points. In addition Wright had 6 assists and 4 steals. Javion Ogunyemi scored 12 points on 5-5 shooting and added 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Hymes finished with 9 points moving him into 24th place all-time in scoring at Siena (1,263) passing OD Anosike. His 3 assists moves him into 10th all-time at Siena (345).
Hart finished with 30 points for Marist (5-20, 4-11), on 10-15 shooting. Leading scorer Chavaughn Lewis was held to just 9 points and committed 8 turnovers.
With the win the Saints move to within a half a game of Canisius and Quinnipiac for the all important fifth place in the MAAC with the top five teams earning a bye in the conference tournament.
Siena returns to the Times Union Center on Saturday to take on Monmouth who they have yet to face this season. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.
