Game Preview: Siena Women vs. Monmouth

The Siena women are at home on Saturday as they take on Monmouth. Tip off at the Alumni Recreation Center is at 2 pm. This is the 14th meeting between the two teams with Monmouth leading the series 9.4, The two teams met just over two weeks ago with the Saints coming out on top, 54-52.

In the earlier matchup, Monmouth’s Sarah Olson scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting overall and 4-7 three pointers in the first half. The rest of the Monmouth squad shot just 2-22 (9.1%) from the field and 1-11 (9.1%) from three in the first 20 minutes. Although the Saints led the entire first half. Monmouth would tie the game twice in the second half as the game went down to the wire. Siena’s Margot Hetzke ultimately hit the game-winner with 9.4 seconds to go to beat the Hawks.

Tehresa Coles led the Saints with 20 points and 9 rebounds in that game. Meghan Donohue finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds and Hetzke scored 8 points with 10 boards. Olson finished with a career-high 27 points for Monmouth on 10-18 shooting overall from the field and 7-12 from beyond the three-point arc.

The Saints enter the game with a record of 13-9 overall and 6-7 in the MAAC tied for 5th place with Canisius. They are coming off a 65-43 win at Rider on Wednesday giving them their 9th road win of the season which ties them for the 3rd most road wins nationally. Siena went just 7-21 on the road the past two seasons.

The Saints play five of the next six at home after having played five of their previous six games on the road.

Coles is currently Siena’s leading scorer averaging 13.6 points per game (4th in MAAC). She leads the MAAC (18th nationally) with 3.0 steals per contest and now has 273 career steals placing her 2nd at Siena all-time behind Mary Gaudreau ’83  with 281. Coles is 4th in the MAAC in free-throw shooting (82.4%). She is 8th all time in free throws made (304) and 25th in scoring (1,037) at Siena.

Freshman Margot Hetzke is just behind Coles averaging 13.5 points per game (5th in MAAC). She averages a team-leading 7.3 rebounds (3rd in MAAC).

Sophomore Meghan Donohue is also in double figures with 10.2 points per game. She is second in the MAAC in field goal percentage shooting 52.6%.

Senior Ida Krogh is a averaging 7.9 points to go along with her 4.5 assists per game which ranks 4th in the MAAC. She reached 100 assists on the season Thursday night, the first Saint to do so since Cristina Centeno had 109 during the 2011-12 season.

The Saints have outrebounded their opponent in 23 of their last 24 games (one tie) dating back to last season. They hold a +7.7 rebounding margin over that span. Their +7.3 rebounding margin this season leads the MAAC and ranks 31st nationally.

The Saints will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day at the game. Student athletes and coaches from all 11 of Siena’s women’s sports teams will be in attendance at the game and recognized for the contributions they’ve made for women in sports.

Monmouth enters the game with a record of 9-13 overall, 5-8 in The MAAC, tied for 7th place with Niagara. The Hawks are coming off a 67-52 win over St. Peter’s on Thursday night. The Hawks finished last season 8-25 overall, 6-14 in the MAAC placing them in 9th place. They were picked to finish 9th in the preseason poll this season.

The Hawks are led by Olson, a 5-8 junior guard who is averaging 12.2 points per game. She has made 52 of 145 three-point attempts (.359). She has hit four or more three-point attempts six times this season. For her career, which includes two seasons at NJIT, she’s connected on six or more three-point field goals in a single game seven times.

Helena Kurt, a 5-5 sophomore guard is also in double figures averaging 10.0 points.

Monmouth leads the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage defense (.266 – 17th nationally) and offensive rebounding (14.4) and ranks 40th nationally averaging 7.3 three-point field goals per game.
