Game Preview: Siena Women vs. Colgate

The Siena women take on Colgate on Sunday afternoon at the Times Union Center in the second game of a double header with the men’s team who face Bucknell (Men’s Game Preview here). Tip off for the men’s game is a 2 pm with the women’s game to follow. It is the 17th meeting between the two teams with the Saints leading the series, 14-2. The Saints have won the last 7 meetings in a row and are 9-0 at home vs. the Raiders.

Siena enters the game with a record of 5-4 following a 62-53 win at Binghamton on Dec 19. They are looking for their third straight win while looking to break a four-game losing streak at the Times Union Center. After a nine-day break, Sunday’s game is the first of four games in seven days for the Saints.

Three of Siena’s losses this season, have come against Akron (10-0), UAlbany (7-4) and Quinnipiac (9-2) which are currently ranked No. 11, 12 and 13 in this week’s CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll.

The Saints are led in scoring and rebounding by four-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, Margot Hetzke a freshman who is averaging 15.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She ranks third in the MAAC in both categories. She ranks 10th in the nation amongst freshmen in scoring.

Senior Tehresa Coles is second on the Saints in points and rebounds averaging 15.1 points (4th in MAAC) and 5.7 boards. She ranks third in the nation averaging 3.78 steals per game.

Sophomore Meghan Donohue is averaging 11.4 points per game and leads the MAAC in field goal percentage shooting 55.3%.

Senior point guard Ida Krogh’s 3.8 assists per game ranks 4h in the MAAC.

Siena leads the MAAC in field goal percentage shooting 41.3% from the field. They shot just 35.4% (’13-’14, 16th worst nationally) and 33.5% (’12-’13, 11th worst nationally) over the last two seasons. They also lead the MAAC in rebounding margin (+7.3).

The Saints have improved significantly on the offensive end as a team averaging 67.0 points per game over their first nine games. It is their highest scoring output over the first nine games of the schedule since the 2000-2001 MAAC Championship season (77.3). They averaged 61.5 points over the course of last season and just 56.6 points in 2012-2013.

With just 7 active players, there are plenty of minutes to be had and each of the seven Saints average 19.7 minutes or more per game.

RPI Ratings: Siena 132, Colgate 291

Colgate enters the game wih a record of 1-9 following a 62-61 loss vs. Kent State on Monday. The Raiders are coming off a 2013-2014 season with a record of 8-22 overall and 4-14 in the Patriot League good for 9th place. They were picked to finish 8th in this year’s preseason poll.

The Raiders are led in scoring by 6-3 junior forward, Josie Stockhill who is averaging 12.0 points per game. She scored a career-high 18 points, all in the second half in Monday’s loss to Kent State.

Carole Harris, a 5-10 senior forward is also in double figures for Colgate averaging 11.1 points. She was on the sideline for the final 20 minutes after suffering an ankle injury just before halftime in Monday’s game.

5-8 junior guard Randyll Butler is averaging 9.0 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds.

As a team, the Raiders are averaging just 54.3 points per game, 16th lowest in the nation.
