Game Preview: Siena Hosts Bucknell At Glens Falls Civic Center

Siena returns to action on Saturday as they play host to Bucknell in a game to be played at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Tip off is scheduled for noon. This is the fourth meeting all time between the two teams with Siena leading the series 3-0.

The last two games between these two teams have been a pair of two-point wins for Siena, winning 73-71 in Albany in 2014 and 83-81 in overtime last year at Bucknell. In last season’s matchup, Brett Bisping had 16 points and 16 rebounds, as the Saints outrebounded the Bison 49-26, including 20 offensive rebounds. Javion Ogunyemi led Siena with 24 points, including the winning layup with 2.2 seconds left in overtime. Zach Thomas led four Bison in double figures with 20 points.

This is just the second time Siena has played a game in the Glens Falls Civic Center and the first time in over 22 years. On Mar. 24, 1994, Siena defeated Bradley, 75-62 advancing them to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

Siena enters the game with a record of 3-7 overall , and 1-1 in the MAAC following a 73-69 loss at Florida Gulf Coast. The Saints will be looking for a much needed win having lost four of their last five games.

“We’ve got to stay the course,” said Siena coach Jimmy Patsos. “It’s a long season. We have good people. They are trying their hardest, we’ve just got to convert. Things like communication and concentration in critical situations would help. A little more focus.”

“These games do matter and we do want to win every time that we go out and play,” said Brett Bisping. “We can use these games to get us ready for MAAC play and that’s what we are trying to do. They [Bucknell] are a good team. They’re tough so we have to be ready to go.”

The Saints have five players averaging in double figures this season. Senior Marquis Wright is leading the way with 16.9 points per game with sophomore Nico Clareth right behind at 16.8. Javion Ogunyemi is averaging 13.7, Lavon Long 12.6 and Brett Bisping is scoring 10.6 points along with his team-leading 9.0 rebounds per game.

Ogunyemi is just 12 points away from reaching the career 1,000 point scoring milestone. He will become the fourth Saint on the curerent roster to reach the mark along with Wright, Bisping and Long.

Nico Clareth may return after missing the last game and recent practices due to knee issues according to Siena coach Jimmy Patsos. Sammy Friday may also return after missing the last three games.

Bucknell enters the game after an 11-day break for final exams with a record of 7-3. The Bison have won five of their last six, including wins over Vanderbilt and Richmond. Bucknell defeated Fairfield on the road 75-64 in the final game before the break.

Zach Thomas, a 6-7 Junior forward continues to lead the team in scoring at 16.0 points per game. Thomas had 25 points against Manhattan in the season opener. Nana Foulland, a 6-9 junior center, is averaging 15.3 points and together the two have scored 42.3% of the team’s points on the season.

The Bison were picked to finish third (behind Lehigh and Boston University) in the Patriot League in a preseason poll.

A year ago, the Bison captured the Patriot League regular-season title for the fifth time in the last six years.

Bucknell’s transition defense has been a strength so far this season. The Bison have given up only 31 fastbreak points in their first 10 games. They went three straight games (Vanderbilt, Norfolk State, Northern Colorado) without giving up any fastbreak points.

Bucknell assistant coach John Griffin is the son of former Siena head coach, John Griffin. Griffin, the son, was a part of Bucknell’s 2005 and 2006 NCAA Tournament teams that won first-round games. He scored 1,084 points in his career and as a senior, earned First Team All-Patriot League honors.
