Freshmen Pass Their First Test

Last night’s game vs Navy was the first on the court test for the freshmen class. It was one which they passed with flying colors. Already playing with a reduced roster, the need for them to step up became even greater when OD got into early foul trouble and Owen went down in the first half with a head injury.  Together they combined for 29 points 9 assists and 7 rebounds. They played with a great deal of composure with only six turnovers combined. Evan and Devonte ran the point the entire game and each only had two turnovers.

They performed well and got a good review from their coach. Mitch had this to say about his newcomers.  “The freshmen did surprise me.  I’ve got to be honest with you.  Evan Hymes was way above my expectations. I thought he really played well.  I thought Beard coming in when Hymes had the leg problem, cramp played well.  I thought Poole played well late. It was tremendous he made some big plays. So, if we can get that kinda play, even Hopper came in when O.D.  got into foul trouble and  we went ahead so I’m elated with the four freshmen. I thought they really helped us win the game.”

Senior captain Brandon Walters saw promising things from his freshmen team mates. “I think its more so about them working hard.  I knew once they worked hard in a game and played hard and played unselfish I knew the sky is the limit for those guys.”

One of the freshmen, Rob Poole was the first off the bench and was called on to contribute. He played well scoring 9 points in 32 minute of action. He had this to say about his fellow frosh. “I think we all played great. Evan played amazing.  He’s the fastest kid I’ve ever seen. D (Devonte) played great. He can get  to the rim anytime he wants.  Marcus came in got the and-one right away his first minute of the game.  I thought we all played good.”

The Saints freshmen will face their next test this Saturday when they hit the road to square off against Mount St Marys.

What impressed me was the shot selection by the entire time; especially the freshmen. I don't remember hardly any poor shots taken, which is quite remarkable considering the number of underclassmen playing. This freshmen group will be fun to watch during the next 4 years.
