It has now been confirmed, Siena Saints sophomore guard Evan Hymes will be transferring and will not return next season. The web site Big Apple Buckets originally reported the news referencing an undisclosed source claiming he will be looking to be closer to his family in North Carolina. The report states, “Hymes met with new Siena head coach Jimmy Patsos when he was hired Wednesday and his exit has to do only with helping his mother, a source said citing that it had taken a turn for the worse since the hiring.”

Mark Singelais of the Albany Times Union confirmed through new head coach Jimmy Patsos that Hymes isn’t returning next season and that his mother in North Carolina is having eye surgery. Singelais reached Hymes who said his mother suffers from glaucoma and his maternal grandparents are also ill. Singelais also reported that Patsos said he looks forward to coaching previously signed recruits, forward Javion Ogunyemi of Troy and guard Stephan Jiggetts from Maryland and that he indicated they are both coming.

With Hymes departure, Patsos is left with 3 scholarships to fill as RS junior Davis Martens confirmed this week he would not be returning next season following graduation in May.

Hymes was the teams 4th leading scorer this season averaging 10.6 points per game, starting 30 of 31 games. He led the team in 3-pointers made with 59, while struggling with turnovers, committing 122 with dishing out 114 assists.

Last season as a freshman he was named to the MAAC All-Rookie team and the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American team averaging 13.4 points per game and was the team’s leading 3 point shooter making 61 threes (10th in the MAAC). He was a four time MAAC Rookie of the Week and was 4th in the MAAC in assists averaging 3.7 per game.He showed great promise from the start scoring 30 points in his second career game (at Mount St. Mary’s 11/19) – the most by a Siena freshman in 16 years.
