Edwin Ubiles Seeks Spot on Pan Am Roster
- Updated: September 27, 2011
Edwin scored 13 points on 6 for 9 shooting with a 3-pointer in a solid performance as Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic 80-77 in a preperation game for the Pan Am Games.
Yesterday, Jose Juan Barea reported to participate in the Games to strengthen a squad, who in recent days also confirmed Carlos Arroyo and Daniel Santiago, leading figures in the national team. Also reported out of the training camp today that two other players who seem to have one foot on the plane to Mexico are Carlos Strong and Edwin Ubiles. Head Coach Flor Melendez had this to say“Both are playing very well. We are very happy with them. “
While selection is under way for the Puerto Rican National Team to compete in the Pan American Games, Head Coach Flor Melendez is waiting to see whether NBA players Jose Juan Barea and Carlos Arroyo will participate. Both Barea and Arroyo have said they would make a final decision whether or not to attend the Pan American Games this weekend. Reports out of the camp indicate that among the group contending for a spot on the team the one drawing the most attention is Edwin Ubiles, who has shone in training for his athletic ability, including several dunks well above the rim on the breaks yesterday. Head coach Melendez stated“… I have been impressed. You have to work it, but there is much potential there,” said Melendez.
Former Siena Saint Edwin Ubiles is one of 17 players preselected to represent Puerto Rico in the Pan Am Games. Those chosen will begin training tommorrow until October 20th when the final cut will be announced. The Pan Am Games, to be held in Mexico, will begin October 26th with Puerto Rico taking on the host team followed by games against Group A teams Argentina and Canada.
Edwin was drafted #1 overall in the BSN, Superior Basketball League in Puerto Rico. He was selected by the Mayagüez Indians, playing a limited role last season as he continued to recover from injuries suffered at the end of his career at Siena.
Ubiles finished his Siena career as the third all time scorer in Siena history with 1,939 points. He was part of the team which won three MAAC championships and made 3 NCAA appearances. Edwin was named Rookie of the Year following his freshman season and was a two time All MAAC first team selection. He was also twice named to the District 1 NABC first team. Following his successful career at Siena a right shin stress fracture put a damper on talks of him having a shot in the NBA draft.
Others pre selected are Carlos Strong, , Jesus Verdejo, Ali Berdiel, Filiberto Rivera, Manuel Narváez, Manuel de Jesus, Luis Villafane, Gabriel ‘Pirulo’ Columbus, Eddin ‘Guayito’ Santiago, Jose Juan Barea, Ryan Abraham,Carlos Arroyo, Daniel Santiago, Jesse Pellot, Alphonse Dyer and Renaldo Balkman. Barea, Arroyo and Balkman’s participation is dependant on the outcome of the current work stoppage in the NBA.
4guysinblazers wishes Edwin the best of luck.
