Edwin Ubiles Captures Gold

Edwin Ubiles and Puerto Rico have captured the gold medal by defeating Mexico 74 to 72 in the final of the Pan AM Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Puerto Rico was led by Renaldo Balkman’s 28 points and 12 rebounds and Jose Juan Barea with 18 points and 8 assists. Edwin, who started for Puerto Rico and finished with 6 points, hit a key shot down the stretch to put his team ahead 72-70. After a tying basket by Jovan Harris of Mexico, Barea hit the game winner with 1.5 seconds to go.

Ubiles finished his Siena career as the third all time scorer in Siena history with 1,939 points. He was part of the team which won three MAAC championships and made 3 NCAA appearances. Following his successful career at Siena a right shin stress fracture put a damper on talks of him having a shot in the NBA draft. Edwin was drafted #1 overall in the BSN, Superior Basketball League in Puerto Rico. He was selected by the Mayagüez Indians, playing a limited role last season as he continued to recover from injuries suffered at the end of his career at Siena.

Following this most recent accomplishment with the Puerto Rican team, Edwin will be weighing his options which will include playing  in the NBA D League or playing professionally overseas.
