In an official release on Monday, Siena announced that Nico Clareth and Kevin Degnan have been named captains for the upcoming season. Here is the official release.

Siena Basketball Head Coach Jimmy Patsos has announced that Nico Clareth and Kevin Degnan have been appointed team captains for the Saints’ upcoming 2017-18 season.

“We are looking forward to having Nico and Kevin lead our team this summer and next season,” said head coach Jimmy Patsos. “Nico has earned the right to be a captain through the energy and effort that he has brought to the program over his first two years. Kevin has been nothing but a model student athlete since arriving on campus, and his vocal leadership and knowledge of the game continue to be great assets to the team.”

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Clareth averaged 13.7 points in 22 appearances (five starts) this past season. The rising junior guard was named a MAAC All-Tournament Team selection thanks in large part to his legendary, 27-point second half performance in the Saints’ conference semifinal victory over regular season champion Monmouth. Clareth scored in double figures in all but five games last season while primarily coming off the bench, and tied for the team lead with 53 threes despite missing a total of 12 games. He was previously named the 2015-16 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year and a MAAC All-Rookie Team honoree after breaking Siena’s freshman scoring record with 447 points.

Degnan is set to make his on-court debut in 2017-18 for the Saints, after sitting out this past year per NCAA transfer regulations. The Pearl River, New York product has two years of eligibility remaining after transferring in from MAAC foe Fairfield. Degnan averaged 2.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.9 minutes of action over 45 games in his two seasons with the Stags. He shot 48.4% from the field including a team-high 44.8% (13-29) from three-point range, while averaging 3.1 points in 7.3 minutes in his final season at Fairfield in 2015-16.

Clareth and Degnan will look to lead a Siena Basketball program which advanced to the MAAC Championship Game this season for the first time in seven years. The Saints finished with a 17-17 overall record this winter, and tied for third in the MAAC with a 12-8 league mark.
