Siena sophomore Jackie Benitez was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year at the annual MAAC awards presentation on Friday morning. Already named and All-MAAC First Team selection earlier in the week Benitez picked up the honor in recognition of an outstanding sophomore season.

Benitez is well known for her skills on the offensive end of the floor. She is second in the MAAC in scoring with 16.7 points per game. She is also second in the conference in free throw percentage (.821), and three-pointers made (82) which sets a program single-season record.

But Benitez’s excellence on the defensive end is also a big key in the Saints’ success. An active defender, her 3.0 steals per game ranks second in the MAAC and 13th nationally. Her 86 steals leads the MAAC and ranks fifth most in a single season in Siena history.

Benitez becomes the fifth player in Siena history to receive the award. Tehresa Coles won the award in 2014-2015.
