Area Schools To Join MAAC Bus Brigade

MAAC Basketball Championship Sends Powerful Message to Local Students
 
(Albany, NY – February 27, 2015) – Local elementary and middle school students from the Albany area schools will be participating in theon Friday, March 6 from 9:30 to 1 p.m. These students have been participating in MAAC Gives Back, a year-long outreach program which pairs local schools with MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams to participate in a pen pal program. MAAC Teams and these local students have been writing letters back and forth to each other throughout the basketball season. This program was designed to connect MAAC students-athletes and local elementary and middle school students in the Albany/Schenectady area.
 
The local students participating in this program will be bused from their Albany area schools to the Times Union Center on South Pearl Street. There they will be listening to a guest speaker talk about anti-bullying supplied by the Albany County Executive Office Task Force on Anti-Bullying.
 
After listening to the informative message, the Bus Brigade students will stay at the arena to watch the MAAC women’s basketball quarterfinal games. During the women’s session, the winner of the MAAC Gives Back essay contest will be recognized on the court at half time. The essay question this year was “What does sportsmanship mean to me?”.  The winner of the contest is Quincy Hytko, a 4th grade student from Abram Lansing Elementary School in Cohoes.
 
The elementary schools and MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball teams are paired up for the MAAC Gives Back program as follows:
 
Pine Hills Elementary School in Albany had eight classes from grades 3 to 6 paired with Canisius College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Manhattan College, Niagara University and Monmouth University.
 
Hackett Middle School in Albany had five seventh and eighth grade classes paired with Monmouth University, Quinnipiac University and Rider University. The Quinnipiac University Women’s Basketball team will be visiting their student pen pals on Wednesday, March 5.
 
Abram Lansing Elementary School in Cohoes had six fourth and fifth grade classes paired with Marist College, St. Peter’s University and Siena College.
 
The MAAC is a Division I athletic conference hosting its MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships at the Times Union Center on March 5 – 9.
