1980s Game 1

Live from the ARC, 4guysinblazers presents game 1 of the 1980s bracket. Tonight’s matchup pits 4 seed Steve McCoy against 5 seed Doug Poetzsch. Here’s a look at the matchup:
Steve McCoy (4): McCoy played for the Saints from 1985-89. He was a member of the 1989 squad that made Siena’s first NCAA appearance and shocked #13 ranked, 3 seed, Stanford in the opening round 80-78. For his career McCoy scored 1334 points, 17th on the all-time list. He led the Saints in rebounding in all four of his seasons. His best season came in his senior year when he averaged 9.3 boards a game, 278 total, 11th best all-time. His career total of 969 is third highest in Siena history trailing only Ryan Rossiter and Lee Matthews. Steve was inducted into the Siena Hall of Fame in 1994.


Doug Poetzsch (5): Poetzsch played for the Saints from 1981-85. He ranks 13th all-time with 1,398 career points. He led the team in scoring his senior season when he averaged 18.9 points per game. His 547 points that season is tied for the 10th best scoring output in the recordbooks, tied with Alex Franklin’s 2009-10 result. Doug was also a threat off the glass. He led the Saints in rebounds in both his junior and senior seasons and his 742 career rebounds are the 7th highest all-time. For his efforts Poetzsch was nationally recognized in 1984 when he was an AP All-American Honorable Mention. Doug was inducted into the Siena Hall of Fame in 1990.
