1980s Championship

In this matchup we have Marc “Showbiz” Brown battling Lee Matthews in the 1980s Championship game. The winner will earn the fourth and final slot to the final four in the All Time Siena player Bracket.

Marc Brown (1): “Showbiz” played for the Saints from 1987-1991. He scored 32 points, including the winning free throws, in the 1989 NCAA tournament win against Stanford. The win was Siena’s first in the tournament. Marc topped that 32 point total three times in his career, setting a career high with 44 during his senior season, the second highest single game total in school history. His 816 points his senior year is the second highest season total, behind only Doremus Bennerman’s 858 in 1994. For his career Brown is Siena’s all-time leading scorer with 2,284 points. His point total was aided by his accuracy from behind the arc where he hit 42.3% of his shots. Despite all those converted field goals Brown was also a very capable distributer. He is a close second to Ronald Moore on the all-time assist list with 796, a 6.5 assist per game average. Marc’s 221 steals are also fourth in Siena history. In recognition of his accomplishments Brown achieved AP Honorable Mention All-American status in his senior season. He was inducted into the Siena Hall of Fame in 1998 and achieved the highest of honors when his jersey was retired during the 2010-11 season

Lee Matthews (3) played for Siena from 1989 to 1993. His1,365 points ranks him 15th all time. He averaged 11.2 points per game over his career and 16.6 as a senior.  His 1,037 rebounds ranks him 2nd all time behind only Ryan Rossiter. He also ranks 2nd all time in career blocks with 179. He was part of a team in 1990-1991 along with Marc Brown and Doremus Bennerman that had a record of 25-10 who were MAAC co champs. that year they went on to the postseason NIT where they defeated Fairleigh Dickinson and South Carolina before losing in overtime to U Mass. in overtime, a game in which Matthews had 15 rebounds and 5 blocks. His freshman year he was named ot the all MAAC rookie team. In 1992 he was 2nd team all MAAC and also honorable mention for Eastern Basketball All East and Basketball Times. As a senior he was named to the all MAAC 1st team and the US Basketball Writers Association District 2 team. He was inducted into the Siena Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
